It’s hard to believe that the High Holydays are soon upon us. This program features two one-hour programs – the first was aired August 31, 2004 and the second hour from September 7, 2006. Next week will also feature three one-hour programs.
Continuing my “Koussevitzky Marathon”, here is the great Moshe Koussevitzky. Sadly, I discovered chazzonus in 1977, too late to hear Moshe live as he died in 1966. People still recount to me how they tried to hear both daven on a particular Shabbos or holiday and then the mayvinim would argue who was ‘better’ on that occasion.
Continuing with the Koussevitzky Marathon, this program features Simcha and Jacob. Moshe to follow.
This is the second week of the “Koussevitzky Marathon”. During the forthcoming weeks I will be featuring Yaakov, Simcha and Moshe. Your feedback is welcome: cbjmusic@aol.com
L'olam Yehe Adam
Avinu Av Harachaman
Yehi Rotzon
Mizratze B'rachamim
Sfira Ha Omer
Al Zos Shibchu Ahuvim
Avinu Malkeinu
Starting with this program I will be featuring the four Koussevitzky brothers for several weeks. This week and next week you will have four hours of Dovid Koussevitky.
You have heard of “poetic license” – well, for the third hour I am taking “audio license” in featuring Ivan Rebroff. His four and a half octaves are astounding. Enjoy.
There is nothing like ‘the real thing’ – live davening. Enjoy Moshe Stern and the Leon Berger choir – 1980 Maariv Sfira Concert at 11th Ave. Synagogue in Boro Park
This week’s program features two excellent cantors who have been neglected during my 41 years of bringing you weekly chazzonus. The Pinkasovitch CD came out in 1993. Since that time, computer programs have been developed to take out the scratches and skips from the old 78 rpm recordings.
I welcome your feedback.
As always, I welcome your feedback. -Charlie
I have some “catch up” to do concerning cantors who I may have neglected. Always open to your comments and suggestions. cbjmusic@aol.com
The second hour is the first part of a two hour special featuring Cantor Berele Chagy. I decided to simply play through the CD that I made without commentary. The second part will be presented in the next few weeks. As I mention, I apologize for the very poor attention I’ve given to this great cantor. (I realize that I may be ‘opening up a can of worms’ and I welcome your feedback) CB
Correction – Dani from Mitzpah Yericho pointed out to me that in show #438 the last two Razel selections were by Yonatan’s brother Aharon. Attended a wonderful concert Sunday with Benyamin Muller, his son Cantor Israel Muller and his nephew Zevi Muller. Danny Gildar gave his usual outstanding accompaniment. Shabbos was a treat.
On June 8 – 10 The Cantorial Council of America will hold its convention at the West Side Institutional Synagogue located at 120 West 76th St. in Manhattan. Shabbos davening will be led by Cantor Benyamin Muller, his son Cantor Israel Muller and his Nephew, Zevi Muller.

I returned from Israel on the 26th – there was a ‘technical’ problem in putting this April 16th Yom Haatzmaut Special up. Had to wait for me to return to work out the problem. Although this is a bit late, I’m sure you will enjoy this belated program. CB
PS, thanks to the many of you who sent me birthday greetings – my 82nd birthday on April 27th.)
Since the start of my hobby in 1977 I have produced almost 40 Yom HaShoa Specials. This is a repeat of my 1990 program. This is one of my favorites. CB (from Israel)
Wishing you all a 'Zissen Pesach'. Shalom. Charlie
Enjoy the show : Have a wonderful Pesach.
Leaving for Israel on April 9th. When I return from Israel on April 26th (a day before my 82nd birthday) during the following week or so my intention is to present a totally new offering for the third hour (I'll occasionally present comedy and YIddish) Stay tuned

I have decided to add programs concerning Yiddish music during the third or fourth hours. This program #426 contains the introduction interview with noted Yiddish/klezmer musicologist Henry Sapoznik together with the first installment of a series of 15 shows that he produced for NPR several years ago. Depending on your reception, it will continue. I will also be experimenting with other programs for the third (and possibly fourth) hours. Among others, I will occasionally add comedy, Israeli Chassidic Song Festivals and shows that I produced from the past 40 years. I’m always interested in your feedback. cbjmusic@aol.com

This is an explanation concerning a change in some of the programming. I realize that there are many albums from the 60’s to the 90’s that most of you have never heard. So, I’ve decided to test a situation where, at various times for the first and third hours - I will simply play a complete album, without comment, without editing. I have over 13,000 albums of Jewish music. For the most part, I have listened to most of them and always felt lucky if there was at least one selection on an album that I ‘liked’. But in this process, I never played all of the other cuts on a record – many that you may prefer. That is the thinking behind my decision to give you the opportunity to listen to an entire album and hear music that you ordinarily would never get to hear.
The second hour of chazzonus will not change. And, periodically I will feature ‘specials’.
Show # 420 January 1, 2018
So, here we are – a new calendar year – 2018. We completed the end of 2017 with a ‘bang’. My partner, Cantor Benny Rogosnitzky, and I put together an unforgettable Shabbat Chazzanut. Those of you who attended will surely agree that it was very, very special. The chazzan at the umid. That’s what it is all about. If we are to move forward with Cantors World, Benny and I will need your financial help. He and I volunteer our time and effort for Cantors World, but we cannot bear the load of personally going ‘on the hook’ to produce events. More about this in the future. Thank you. CB

As you are aware, I am presently in Israel. If all went according to schedule, I spent this past Shabbos Chaye Sarah in Hebron. I know that I surely had the late Benzion Shenker on my mind. He died last November at the age of 91.
I was privileged to have two two-hour special interviews with him. For this show I am presenting the first interview that took place on May 29th, 1994 at the radio studio of WSOU at Seton Hall University (where I had a weekly two-hour show for 17 years). Benzion was 69 years old at the time. This interview and the later interview I did in 2011 with Benzion are among my most cherished memories from the 40 years I have been broadcasting.

This is a Carlebach Special. Reb Shlomo died 23 years ago on October 20th 1994. The funeral was on Sunday, October 24th. That evening I presented a Carlebach Special. Fifteen years later, on October 26th, 2009 I did another Carlebach Special repeating most of the 1994 special – adding an interview I did with Rabbi Naftali Citron, Rabbi of the Carlebach Shul in Manhattan.
I left for Israel yesterday on November 5th. If all goes as planned, I will be in Hebron next Shabbos for Chaye Sarah.
A Carlebach Yahrzeit Special will take place next week, Saturday November 11th (2017) – at the West Side Institutional Synagogue, sponsored by the Carlebach Shul. I’ve been having fun listening to tapes of 1977 and 1978 and will probably be sharing some of them in the near future. It’s quite remarkable for me to note my history with Jewish music

Announcing a new series "Laughter is the Best Medicine". This is a trial to gauge your response and acceptance. Aside from my collecting Jewish music recordings, I have a secondary collection of hundreds of comedy albums – many of them of Jewish comedians. There is an issue concerning the fact that in many instances, the language is inappropriate for my show. I will do my best to filter them out.
This first album is one of the best – “You Don't Have to be Jewish”, recorded in 1965 – 52 years ago. It features Betty Walker, Frank Gallop, Arlene Golonka, Lou Jacobi, and Jackie Kannon.

he first two segments present almost three hours of a Sefira Maariv Concert that I co-produced with my partner, Cantor Benny Rogosnitzky under ‘Cantors World’. It took place at the Bialystoker Synaogue on May 2nd, 2004. It featured Cantors Pinchas Cohen, Yaakov Motzen, Moshe Schulhof and Moshe Stern. The third and fourth segments are a presentation of a two-hour Yom Hashoa Special from April 22, 1990. This Yom Hashoa Special is one of my proudest that I produced for this important commemoration over the 40 years that I have been broadcasting. I had the dilemma – should I air the Yom Hashoa special during Sefira? I am personally consumed by the Holocaust and, as you see, made the decision to air it.
Please note that Cantor Benny Rogosnitzky and I are presenting a Mincha/Maaariv/Sefira Davening on Sunday, May 7th at 7:30. It will take place at the ‘Sfardish Shul’ – First Congregation Anshe Sfard of Borough Park located 4502 14th Avenue, Brooklyn. This three hour special is dedicated to my friends, Sol and Paul Zim, reviewing their outstanding contribution to the world of Jewish music - particularly, chazzonus.
(Please note re: Show #383 of March 7th - Dr. Dani of Mitspe Yericho, Israel pointed out to me that the four selections attributed to Dudu Fisher are actually sung by Shai Abramson. I apologize for the mix-up).
Just returned from Motti Lazar’s Hazamir concert at the Met on Sunday. Fabulous!
I am in the process of finalizing a three-hour Sol & Paul Zim Special to be aired next week. I had the pleasure of hearing the Hampton Synagogue Choir, led by Itzchak Haimoff, this past Shabbos with Cantor Zevi Muller at WSIS. It was a pure delight! The choir was with Yaakov Rosenfeld in Boro Park the previous Shabbos and next Shabbos will be with Netanel Herstik in Teaneck. We are surely fortunate to have these outstanding Shabbosim. It would be wonderful if more shuls would present their congregants with ‘True Soul Music’ – it doesn’t get any better than this. During the third hour we will hear the last segment of Cantor Alberto Mizrahi’s 8-part series, ‘The Art of the Cantor’. Thank you Alberto. Most enjoyable and educational.
This is the last of 8 programs that were hosted by my friend, Cantor Alberto Mizrahi of Chicago. It was aired over WFMT Radio Network in 2009 and I had featured it seven years ago on my radio program. Cantor Mizrahi has served at Anshe Emet Synagouge in Chicago for over 27 years

Progam #3 Greatest Cantors of the 20th Century
If you have not seen my monthly Cantorial Calendar, email me and in subject line put “Calendar”. The February calendar is loaded with info about the world of chazzonus. .
Last week, during the third hour, I completed presenting the eight program series by Professor Howard Rothman. I know that you found if of great interest. This week I am presenting the first of eight programs by my friend, Cantor Alberto Mizrahi. As lovers of chazzonus I am sure that you will also find this series of great interest. Enjoy! .
We are certainly living in interesting times. By the way – are you receiving my monthly cantorial calendar? Aside from info about cantorial events there are often many items of interest for lovers of chazzonus. Simply send me an email at cbjmusic@aol.com and in the subject line type “Calendar” and I’ll put you on the list. Or, note on the home page of this website another simple way to get on the list. .
I hope to see many of you this Thursday at 12:30 at an important demonstration taking place at the French Mission to the UN located at 885 Second Avenue (at 47th St.). On Sunday, January 15th the French are hosting a gathering of over 50 Foreign Ministers to come up with a resolution to create a Palestinian State. This is orchestrated by Hussein Obama and his lackey, John Kerry. Mr. Hussein Obama – still wreaking his hatred for Israel and the Jewish people. No surprise. .
This new year of 2017 marks 40 year of my sharing my recordings with you. It all started in 1977 when Larry Gordon gave me 45 minutes to do a weekly ‘pre-Shabbos’ show on his new show at WFMU at Upsala College – that was my first introduction to this wonderful soul music – at the age of 41. So, as someone who was not raised with this soul music I can attest to the fact that one can learn to appreciate this music at any age. It’s a matter of education and exposure. Help me to celebrate this milestone by informing others about the show and calendar. You never know – you could ‘turn someone on’ to this fantastic music. .
As if his act of orchestrating the UN vote is not enough, Hussein Obama is planning to destroy Israel at the January 15th Paris gathering to declare a Palestinian State. An appropriate legacy for a treacherous enemy of the Jewish people. .
Wishing you all a Happy Chanukah! When it seemed like all hope was lost, we are blessed with living in a time of miracles.
If you are interested in learning more about Shmuel Malavsky, go to Show # 204 of June 24, 2013. On that program is a rebroadcast of my two-hour interview in 1992 with the surviving Malavsky children. For info on January 14th Salon Series opener email cantorialsociety@aol.com
This is a reminder – the first ‘salon’ will take place Motzoi Shabbos, January 14th in Manhattan featuring Chazan Yaakov Motzen. Sponsored by newly formed Cantorial Society. Seating is limited to under 100. Already sold 30 seats. If you have interest in attending, contact Charlie at cantorialsociety@aol.com to get further information
As previously stated, I am extremely sad to note the passing of Benzion Shenker. He epitomized true “Jewish soul music”. He was modest and unassuming - always had a smile – reflecting the JOY he had in presenting his music. He certainly brought JOY to those whose lives he touched through his music. I had the honor of interviewing him for a two-hour Shenker Special in 1994. That interview is being presented in this week’s program. On November 7, 2011 I did another two-hour special – recorded at Benzion’s home with his brother, Chaim Boruch present. You can hear that interview by scrolling down to Show #125 of this Archive. During the third hour you will hear two interviews recorded this past motzoi Shabbos with Chaim Boruch Shenker and Velvel Pasternak. You will also hear Benzion’s complete first album from 1956.
Again – as noted above, scroll down to Show #125 to hear a second two-hour interview with Benzion from November, 2011 from five years ago.

As I’ve mentioned before, I recently formed “The Cantorial Society” – a 501-c-3 organization dedicated to preserving and promoting chazzonus. I am planning an introductory ‘salon’ series – the ‘salon’ will be an evening with an outstanding cantor accompanied by Cantor Daniel Gildar. It will also offer an opportunity to present new talent. It is planned that the salon will take place motzoi Shabbos in Manhattan. I am working on January 14th as the potential first of three salons. Space is limited to under 100 people. I am presenting this to you to give you a “heads up” as this will definitely be a sold out event. Tickets will be strictly on a first request basis. If you have interest in the possibility of attending, email me cantorialsociety@aol.com and simply write “salon”. Once I have details I will contact you with the information and you can decide then if you want to participate. If you have any questions, contact me at cantorialsociety@aol.com

As noted from last week, the 48 cantors featured on programs this and last week constitute a ‘primer’ of great cantors from the past. These two shows were done two years ago to be played while I was in Israel at that time. I am currently traveling and hope to return and be ready for a new program on September 5th.

This two hour program features a recording of a live Sfira Maariv concert from May 2, 2004. It took place at the Bialystoker Synagogue on the Lower East Side. Featured cantors Moshe Stern, Yaakov Motzen, Moshe Schulhof and Pinchas Cohen. The choir was conducted by Matthew Lazar. This event was sponsored by Cantors World, an organization that my partner, Cantor Benny Rogosnitzky and I formed in 2002. It was dedicated to preserving and presenting traditional chazzonus. If you take a moment and go to the home page and click on ‘Posters’, you will find the poster for this Sfira Maariv as well as many of the other events that we produced. You may be aware of my fondness for Cantor Malovany. He certainly is among the most outstanding cantors of this generation. Also, aside from his singing, composing and teaching, he is an excellent pianist and musician – a rarity. Cantor Malovany is a champion for ‘Nusach’.

Of course there is nothing like a recording of a ‘live’ davening. Unfortunately, the vast majority of live recordings are from Shabbos, Holiday and Hi-Holy days. You are probably aware that there is a vast ‘underground’ of live davenings. Any comments? cbjmusic@aol.com

One of the interesting facts concerning the cantors presented during the second hour is that every one of them sang in a choir as a child. There is no question that this early exposure to the beauty of chazzanus influenced them greatly. And, as you are aware, I feel it is tragic that the centers of Jewish life here in America are essentially devoid of young shul choirs (and chazzans).

I confess that I don’t play enough Jewish comedy recordings – something for me to work on. The second hour features a ‘Pierre Pinchik Special’. I will be preparing more of such specials. If you have a particular cantor you want me to feature, please let me know and I’ll try to honor your request. cbjmusic@aol.com
