Thank you for your condolences and support during these difficult times. It’s been very satisfying for me to know that you are with me. Some of you go way back, 43 years, when I first got started with this hobby. I particularly have been proud of what my dear friend Cantor Benny Rogosnitzky and I accomplished with creating and running Cantors World – dedicated to supporting a renewal of interest in traditional chazzonus. Benny and I still have hope for a resurgence in promoting this wonderful and unique aspect of our religion.

Dear Friends,

I am extremely sad to inform you of the death of my wife, Helen Freedman, this past Wednesday, August 12th. She was buried at Montefiore cemetery on Thursday. She was 85 years old. Two years ago she was operated on a very difficult procedure removing a large tumor from her cheek. The tumor eventually spread to her sinus area. We fought the cancer, but lost the battle.

I am suspending my programs for a few weeks. I will try to come back beginning with a Slichos special. However, if you want to be informed of the date of my return, make sure that you are registered for my Cantorial Calendar. Simply email cbjmusic@aol.com and write ‘calendar’ in the subject line.

Helen was a most talented and special Jew. She was Executive Director of AFSI (Americans for a Safe Israel) for over 20 years. Israel was her great love. Israel ‘shlayma’ was one her many causes. Annually, she ran two ‘chizzuk’ tours of Israel that were inspirational and unique. We visited so-called settlements, Gush Katif, and Hebron every Chaya Sarah.

She was beloved by all who knew her. There is much more to tell about her amazing life, but I’ll leave that to another time.

I am mourning the loss of my brother Robert. He was retarded and spent most of his 85 years in outstanding New Jersey facilities – his last 30 years in a group home. He was an eternal child, always happy and laughing. May his soul rest in peace. I hope that you are coping well with the ‘situation’. Better days are finally near.

This past week we observed the first yahrzeit of Cantor Sherwood Goffin. The second hour begins with prayers appropriate to these unusual and awesome times in which we live. Cantor Yossi Malovany has served as chief cantor of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue in Manhattan since 1973.

You are certainly aware that Moredchai Werdyger is the son of the late Cantor David Werdyger – thus MBD Mordechai Ben David. MBD was born in 1951.

By now you surely know that I started this hobby of sharing my recordings in 1977. The 1970’s through the 1980’s were special years of Israel creativity in Jewish music. A focal point each were the Song Festivals – Chassidic, Israeli, Oriental. The first hour features many of the ‘classics’ of that era. Somehow, sadly, in the later years, for me, something was lost – perhaps an ‘Americanization’ of the music. As you listen to the recordings from the festivals from 1978, 79, 80 and 81, perhaps you will understand my feelings.

With the deaths of Mordechai Sobol and Isaac Reznik it looks like this program is one of the few in the world featuring chazzonus. It creates an even greater sense of urgency that my collection be digitized and archived for future generations. I’m working on it.

Isaac broadcast his weekly ‘Art of the Cantor’ program in South Africa for many years. More about Isaac in the future.
